Citrus

Tsb Sugar's investment in citrus agriculture consists of 3 citrus estates and four pack houses where grapefruit and oranges are cultivated. Citrus varieties cultivated include "Star Ruby, Rose, Marsh, Delta, Valencia and Midnight".

The citrus is packed in a variety of pre-printed cartons for the export market. The high quality of the fruit ensures a secure preference market where a price premium is received for quality fruit.

The marketing of the citrus is undertaken by Komati Fruits, a partnership between various citrus producers. The major export harbours are Maputo and Durban.
GFC exported 3 million cartons of Citrus in 2005. The export percentage of 61% is obtained by best practices on cultivation, irrigation methods and management. GFC also recently obtained EUROPGAP certification for its operations, HACCP certification for its pack houses and a 5 star NOSA certification for its management of Safety, Health and the Environment.

A total of 280 employees are employed on a permanent basis. Major activities such as harvesting, weed control and fertilising are outsourced to outside contractors.
