FACTORY MANAGERPongola Sugar Mill - Closing 20 Jan 2010

Success in this key role requires a degree/National Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical or Chemical Engineering/Chemistry, whilst a GCC will be advantageous. Candidates further need a minimum of 8 years' working experience in a sugar factory at Engineering/Production Manager (or equivalent) level or higher. Equipped with initiative, conceptual thinking, decision-making skills and vision, the incumbent will be able to apply his/her financial and commercial awareness, while expertly managing and leading staff. A general understanding of sugar cane agriculture in an operating environment is also essential, while additional knowledge of the Sugar industry will be an added advantage.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing all facets of the production and maintenance operations at Pongola Sugar Mill, including the Extraction and Energy, Sugar Refinery and Technical Service Sections. To this end, he/she will:

  • Assist in the development of strategic plans for Production, Engineering, Human Resources, BEE and SHEQ for the factory
    Draw up the annual production budget.
  • Be responsible for the Factory capital and operational budgets, as well as manage expenditure, mill contribution and stores and sugar inventory levels
  • Manage Production, Engineering and Projects in line with good management practices to achieve budgets.
  • Manage product quality and deliver on the Factory production performance targets.
  • Manage business risk, ensuring compliance with the ISO Quality System and the OHS Act.
  • Uphold engineering standards and ensure that Factory operations meet all statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Deliver improvements in Factory safety, to reach Sugar industry best practice and requirements.
  • Catalyse and implement operational and cost-reduction improvements.
  • Manage the communications with external and internal partners.
  • Provide team leadership to the Factory team
  • Execute performance management and identify and facilitate the training needs of all senior staff members.
  • Ensure the appropriate development of the factory staff complement by line management.
